The Hertford county Register of Deeds Office provides permanent legal document for Hertford County.  We strive for accurate records, courteous service, and a pleasant atmosphere.

Hertford County Register of Deeds records date back to the 1860’s.  All previous records were destroyed during the Civil War.

 

IMPORTANT DATES;

            Marriage registry only 1868 –1903

            Marriage certificate 1904-Present

            Births & Deaths 1913-Present

            Military Discharges-1928-Present

 

VITAL RECORDS:

To obtain certified copies of marriages, births or deaths, an individual or immediately family only, may come into the office with a valid drivers license or state ID.  A request may be made through mail payable by money order or official check. 

 

Marriages:

 

When applying for a marriage license to be married, the couple should be in the

office by 4:30 p.m. to complete application form.  The couple has 60 days to marry before the license expires.  They will need to bring with them a drivers  license or valid state ID and social security card.

 

Note:  If parties are under 18 or divorced within 6 months of applying for license, please call the office to verify requirements.

 

REAL ESTATE:

Effective July 1, 2002 , any instrument presented for registration must meet all of the following requirement:

 

·        Presented on 8 ½ “ x 11” or 8 ½ x 14” paper

·        Has a blank margin at top of first page of 3” and ½” on remaining sides of the page and all sides of subsequent pages

·        Typed or printed in black on white paper in a legible font that is not smaller than 10 points in size

·        Is printed in single-sided pages

·        Indicates the type of instrument at the top of the first page

·        The new requirements permits blanks to be filled in and corrections to be made by hand in pen

 

If a document presented for recording does not meet the requirements listed above, the register should collect a $25.00 fee for filing a “nonstandard document".

 

All documents are required to have 2 ½” margin at the bottom of the last page or an additional page to certify the notary(s) name.
